To ensure proper alignment, frame components are held in a fixture during the initial bonding process. While commercial fixtures are available, we decided to make something composites-specific that fits into our design and fabrication workflow. Each frame’s CAD file contains the fixture as a component, and any unique locating blocks are easily exported for 3d printing. Setup is straightforward with a few measurements from CAD—mitered tubes are test fit and everything double checked prior to bonding with structural adhesive. Seeing a frame come together for the first time is a highlight of the process.
