Road. Summer 2023
In the automotive world, trucks and SUVs have taken hold. Ford no longer makes cars, and the wagon is an endangered species cladded in plastic and marketed as All-Track, Cross-Trek, or Cross-Country. Car enthusiasts and the automotive press lament, insisting sedans or wagons a better choice for most. The ‘brown estate with a manual transmission’ held up as a symbol of refined taste and connoisseurship.
I had a similar enthusiast in mind while planning this build, wondering what’s the cycling equivalent of the coveted brown wagon—or maybe—what’s the equivalent of an E63 AMG Wagon? This frame features custom geometry and carbon layup, subtly shaped tubing, modern standards including a T47 bottom bracket and integrated headset. Lightweight, but not to the point of fragility (you can sit on the top tube), agile with all-day comfort, and finished in beautiful metallic paint.
The components center around a pair of SRAM 900 levers, modified for electronic shifting. At 118g each, they’re lighter than any stock offering from SRAM. The drivetrain is second generation Force AXS in a 1x configuration. Braking is handled by a pair of Cane Creek eeBrakes and the cockpit comprised of some of Easton’s lightest offerings. The bike rolls on a beautiful pair of gloss black Princeton CarbonWorks Alta 3532 wheels laced to Tune hubs. A sleeper.
